Piccolo Grande Amore
1993
Some images stay with us before we understand why.
I remember this scene from Piccolo Grande Amore vividly from childhood.
At the time, it was simply a film. A summer somewhere else. Water, movement, sunlight and that particular feeling that everything important could happen before the afternoon was over.
Years later, the image still feels familiar.
Perhaps because the things that make up Dolce Far Niente were already there.
The sea. The heat. A little romance. The freedom of disappearing for an afternoon. The feeling that somewhere, life might be moving at a different pace.
The film tells the story of Sofia, a young princess expected to marry for duty, who escapes the life chosen for her and finds another one for a while in Sardinia.
But this is not really about the story.
It is about the memory of seeing it.
There are films we remember because they were great films.
And then there are scenes that simply become part of us.
This was one of mine.
